Patient Receives First Double Leg Transplant
A man underwent the first double leg transplant in Valencia, Spain on Sunday. The surgery lasted ten hours and doctors believe the patient may be able to begin walking in six or seven months with the use of crutches. Doctors claim that the next few days are crucial to the surgery’s success as the legs must receive a strong blood supply from the patient’s body to ensure his body does not reject them.
The doctor who conducted the surgery was the same doctor who performed Spain’s first double hand transplant in 2006 and Spain’s first face transplant in 2009.
