Questions Concerning Jeter’s 3,000th Hit Continue
As I previously blogged here and here, many tax questions surround Christian Lopez’s decision to give back the record making ball he caught during a Yankees game. Holt Irby, an attorney in Garland, Texas, poses an interesting legal theory concerning Lopez’s catch: If either the American League, the Yankees, or the ballpark was the “true owner” of the ball prior to Lopez’s catching it, then is Lopez just a “finder” of the ball and thus obligated to return it to the true owner?
Special thanks to Holt Irby (Attorney, Garland, Texas) for brining this legal theory to my attention.
