Taiwan Hopes to Increase Organ Donations

Human-organ-transplant_4515_310x235 The Department of Health’s Bureau of Medical Affairs in Taiwan will discuss revising regulations on organ donation and distribution in an effort to encourage organ donation. The Bureau hopes to have proposed amendments by the end of this month.

The amendments will potentially increase organ donation by placing volunteer organ donors and family members of individuals whose organs are harvested upon death on the priority list for organs. In other words, if an individual makes an organ donation, then she will be placed on the priority list for organ donations should she ever need a transplant.

The department is also considering revisingrules that regulate live organ donations to non-relatives and the time limits for organ harvesting.
