Record-Setting Kidney Transplant Chain
90,000 people in the U.S. are waiting on a kidney replacement and one stranger can be all that it takes to save a life. Rick Ruzzamenti was one of the first strangers to give his kidney to a stranger in need whose family could not provide a match. His generosity started a chain of events that resulted in numerous people in need receiving a kidney.
The man who makes this all possible is Garet Hil, an ex-marine who orchestrates blood types, profiles, and logistics to create the longest kidney chain ever tried. He created the National Kidney Registry and just recently, the chain ended with the 30th transplant in 47-year-old Donald Terry.
