CLE on 2012 Estate Planning Techniques

EpThe ABA is sponsoring a teleconference and live audio webcast called McCaffrey & Blattmachr – Using 2012’s Best Estate Planning Techniques. The CLE will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2012.  It lasts for an hour and a half and there are four different time slots available.  A description of the program is below:

The necessity of engaging in year-end planning has become even more important as the use of current exemptions and planning techniques might soon expire. This uncertainty has prompted many planners to counsel their clients to “use it before you lose it.” Certain planning techniques may require several months to implement, creating the necessity to commence year-end planning well in advance
of December.

This timely e-CLE features nationally renowned estate planning attorneys Carlyn S. McCaffrey of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and Jonathan G. Blattmachr of Eagle River Advisors both in New York,
NY.

Carlyn and Jonathan will address the importance of utilizing current exemptions and planning techniques in light of the uncertainty surrounding wealth transfer laws. Attention will be given to the Obama estate tax proposals and the effect of such proposals on current estate planning
techniques.

Panelists will then cover the use of certain planning techniques to take advantage of current wealth transfer laws before they expire, such as the GRAT, QPRT, Spousal Trusts and Self-Settled Trusts. Panelists will also examine drafting and funding issues such as the reciprocal trust doctrine
and formula transfer clauses.

The panelists will cover:

  • Obama estate tax proposals and the importance of planning now.
  • GRATs, QPRTs, Split-Purchase Trusts, SM Spousal Trusts & Self-Settled
    Trusts.
  • Funding a trust for installment sale purposes.
  • Reciprocal trust doctrine – and how to avoid it.
  • Formula funding clauses with “safety nets.”
