CLE on Estate Planning for Family Business Owners
The ABA Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law and the ABA Section of Taxation are co-sponsoring a CLE entitled, Estate Planning for the Family Business Owner. The CLE will be in San Francisco at the Ritz Carlton from July 18-20, 2012. A brief description of the topics covered is below:
You owe it to your clients to understand the strategies for family business succession planning taught at this course. Using the example of an actual (California) family business, this program illustrates and directly addresses the key issues estate planners and advisors must consider in today’s uncertain — and sure to change — environment.
Right now, the worst thing you can do for you clients is to do nothing. For example, numerous “George W. Bush Era” tax cuts are due to expire at the end of 2012, likely signaling the closing of an unprecedented window of opportunity. The faculty will examine these expiring cuts — and other planning opportunities such as the large gift and GST exemptions — that may be available for the last time in 2012.
If you represent a family business or are an estate planner requiring a deeper understanding of the closely held business, this one-of-a-kind course is for you. Instruction runs the gamut, including discussion on choice of entity, charitable planning, tax matters, and legislative uncertainties — even ways to guide owners to understanding the need for appropriate business planning. You will learn practical strategies to help you customize your plan for particular situations and ways to implement those plans using workable best practices, including drafting buy-sell agreements.
