Coalition Against Insurance Fraud Adds 8 to the Hall of Shame

HallofshameBusiness Insurance, the creator of the Coalition Against InsuranceFraud, recently inducted eight new members into “The Hall of Shame.” According tothe Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, ‘”The Hall of Shame annuallydishonors the year’s most brazen, vicious or plain klutzy convicted insurancecriminals.”‘ 

One chilling incident involved a man named Michael Weaver, aseverely mentally handicapped individual. David Player and Gerald Hardin, hiscaregivers, convinced him to cut off his hands for insurance money. Using a trimmerwith a chainsaw blade Player and Hardin cut off Mr. Weaver’s hands. Mr. Player,who had Mr. Weaver’s power of attorney, told the insurance company it was an accident. The insurance paid out $671,000, and most of the money went toMr. Player. Player received a 14-year sentence in federal penitentiary, andHardin was sentenced to three years and five months. Another bizarre incident involved an women luring her ex-husband to her home to indulge in his favorite dessert that she had poisoned withmorphine and muscle relaxants in quantities of over 80 times the normal dose.She was trying to collect on a $100,000 life insurance policy. Convicted ofmurder, insurance fraud, and other crimes she received over 60 years inprison.
