Debt Collection After Death

MoneyA woman from Houston, Texas named Allison Currie is understandably upset after a debt collector decided to call her sister and demand that she appear in court to settle a debt. The problem is that Currie’s sister died years ago at the age of 18. When Currie tried to contract the collector that threatened her, she was unable to reach anyone. The company the collector apparently worked for was no where to be found either, even after Currie received help from a local news station. Unfortunately, Currie’s story is not uncommon as collection schemes have become more popular in recent years. In fact, “in 2011, the Federal Trade Commission received more complaints related to debt collectors than any other industry.” Hopefully the newly Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will curb some on these debt collections.
