CLE Teleconference on The Impact of State Filial Laws
On April 8, 2013, The Section of Real Property, Trusts and Estate Law is hosting a Trust and Estate Teleconference entitled The Impact of State Filial Laws: Are Your Clients Responsible for Their Parent’s Care? The information from the program website is below:
Thirty states have filial responsibility laws, requiring children to provide necessities for parents who cannot do so for themselves. States, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities have attempted, often successfully, to use these laws to collect the cost of care from adult children.
This program will cover:
- When these laws apply;
- How they have been applied;
- Potential defenses; and
- Ways clients can plan to minimize their potential liability.
