Councilwoman Hasn’t Paid Taxes Since 1991
Last fall, Gary Common Councilwoman Marilyn Krusas was charged with one count of tax evasion. Federal attorneys claimed she had not filed a return for more than two decades. Since 1997, the government had assessed her four times for $157,413.
In 2009, she received a $232,000 inheritance, but instead of using that to pay her taxes, she tried to hide the money from government.
She now admits that the hid the inheritance from the IRS because she did not want to pay more than the $157,000 she owed for not filing an income tax return since 1991.
Krusas faces up to five years in prison, but Federal attorneys said that they would not recommend more than what federal sentencing guidelines recommend, which will be determined later.
