Man on Death Row’s Request to Donate Organs Denied

DeathrowA 40-year-old man on death row requested to donate his organs to his mother and sister. The man is convicted of raping and murdering a three-year-old little girl. He was hoping to give his sister his heart and his mother who is battling kidney disease a new kidney. However, the attorney for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction denied the request and stated “Although DRC recognizes that organ donation is a laudable goal, DRC is not equipped to facilitate organ donation for Mr. Phillips. DRC respectfully declines your request for post-execution organ donation. DRC considers organ donation to be a private matter between Mr. Phillips, his family and his attorneys.” Although the letter also indicated that that post mortem, the family could pursue organ donation.
