More to Estate Administration of Real Estate Than Handing Over Documents
When an estate executor is tasked with distributing real estate property to an intended beneficiary, there is more work to be done than putting the deed in the new owner’s hands. However, it is a common misconception that handing over a deed is the first and last step of the process. Other often forgotten, but necessary steps include:
- Checking the status of property tax payments
- Obtaining the legal documents necessary to prove ownership by the deceased individual
- Researching and verifying the chain of title
- Making sure local state rules are followed in the transfer
- Seeking legal advice and assistance if necessary
