Dutch Royal Family: Court Grants Illegitimate Son Royal Title
Prince Carlos de Bourbon de Parme, now 48, went to court in an effort to prevent his illegitimate son, Hugo Klynstra, from using his title and surname. Klynstra was the product of a relationship between Carlos and his childhood friend, Brigitte Klynstra. Carlos has claimed that the pair had an agreement that prohibited their son from taking on his father’s royal status. Fortunately for Klynstra, a Hauge court held that “Klynstra has the right to change his surname to De Bourbon de Parme and claim the royal title and address.” The court qualified this by noting that their ruling “does not mean Klynstra now becomes a member of the De Bourbon de Parme royal house. That is a private matter for the royal house itself.”
