First U.S. face transplant patient continues to do well

Culp_Connie Earlier on this blog, I reported that things were going well for Connie Culp who received the first face transplant performed in the United States.

Here is some additional information from AP, 1st U.S. face transplant shows face, USA Today, May 5, 2009:

  • Connie made her first public appearance with her new face on May 5, 2009.
  • Although her face appears somewhat bloated, squarish, and has some drooping skin, subsequent operations are planned to fix these issues once the circulation in her new face improves.
  • Her need for a replacement face was caused by her husband shooting her in the face in 2004.
  • Before receiving the face transplant, she underwent 30 operations to attempt to repair the damage using more traditional techniques.
